Carlene "Spirit" Roberts is the Business Director & Project Coordinator for the Diversity Poet Educators. Who serves as an Event Host, Spoken Word Artist, and Community Advocate. Originally from New York , now residing in Virginia Beach raising and mentoring her young visual artist, Xavier Roberts-Perez and her youngest, Michael-Reign Josiah Roberts. Both are her inspiration for her activism.
News Editor for Diversity Poet Educators, arts and culture magazine, The Prototype. Event Coordinator for Soul Café Self Expression Community Out Reach Program. Local organizer for the Million More Movement. Former on air radio host for WGPL 1350. Also former member of the National Council of Negro Women. On the panel of The Community Advocacy Network, which went to congress to speak out against the budget cuts to social programs. Former Advisory Committee Leader for The City of Norfolk Culture Teen Fest and on the entertainment committee for the Virginia Juneteenth Festival.
In addition to promoting her new Book, "Its Not Personal, It's Spiritual" and her her group collaboration CD, We Just Want To Be Heard. along with her other group members Carlene "Spirit" Roberts has opened for Susan Taylor of Essence Magazine, The Last Poets,Melba Moore, Ursula Rucker and more. Also has worked with Bernadette Stanis ("Thelma" Good Times), Jeany Bryson (Dizzy Gillespie's daughter), Cuba Gooding Jr. and others. Including Black Ice and many HBO Def Poets, and has performed at several colleges across the east coast. Featured in several published anthologies as well as in 2006 her poetry was featured in the Suffolk, VA Museum as a literary art display called The Art Of "T". In 2006 and 2007, she was nominated for The Community Orientated Underground Poet by the National Underground SpokenWord Poetry Awards (NUSPA). She won, in 2007 the "More Like Family" award from NUSPA.
Graduated from a specialized art school called Fashion Industries, studying Fashion Design and Merchandising. Also attended Long Island University in New York , focusing on Marketing & Advertisement. Over 8 years experience in management and Medical Administration. Currently, Carlene "Spirit" Roberts has taken time off from her art and activism to focus on her family and persuing her degree in Education. As well as work on her second book, "From Prostitution To Redemption".
